Article: You can't keep breast implants for life, FDA says - Reuters

This report is interesting because it's states some rather obvious facts but also addresses some myths about breast implant dangers , always remember that breast implants be it saline or silicone are a foreign object in the body and of course they aren't meant to be lifetime devices or solutions to your ideal breast size.

The agency said the studies overall confirmed its decision that implants can be used safely, but noted the conclusions could be limited because some women dropped out.

“The key point is that breast implants are not lifetime devices,” said Jeff Shuren, director of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health. “The longer you have the implant, the more likely you are to have complications.”

To Young for a Breast Reduction

I like to checking on some plastic surgery forums every now and then to get an idea of what men and women are discussing about cosmetic produces, etc.

This question I copied below caught my attention because it isn't extremely common among young women to have naturally large breasts that cause such discomfort and other health problems.

However my answer to this question would be that, regardless of what age you are, it's most important that you always feel comfortable in your own body.

Even though this user is only 19 years old in my opinion she should indeed seek breast reduction surgery to alleviate her back pain and concerns of looking disproportional to her body weight.

Okay so I'm just wanting some honest opinions here.

So I'm 19, almost 20.
I weigh about 150.
I am a 34 DDD.

I constantly have back aches if I stand to long at a time. And lord knows my back aches after I go on a run.

I am strongly considering getting a breast reduction. I think this will greatly ease my back pains.

I also think that it'll make me look significantly slimmer. (I'm in college this matters :] )

I don't really know if this idea is completely out of question because I am so young.

What are your opinions???

Do Bigger breasts, mean a bigger salary? Or a feminist nightmare

This has to be one of the most concerning and ridiculous reasons for wanting to get breast surgery, having been a board certified plastic surgeon for over 20 years I have done a fair share of cosmetic consultations. When I hear from patients  the reasons for them  wanting to have breast surgery, it's reasons like this that concern me very much.

VEXED IN THE CITY SOLVING YOUR WORK-LIFE PROBLEMS

DEAR VEXED: I’m thinking about getting a breast augmentation to help me get ahead at work. Should I? Denise, 26, investment banking

AN author and economist called Catherine Hakim has written widely on an idea called erotic capital. It says that you do better at work and in your life if you are more beautiful. She has a book on this theme to be released soon.

So your question, which initially causes something of a raised eyebrow, is also fair.

But – assuming there is something to Hakim’s main theme – I would first of all question the degree to which erotic capital should be defined by breast size. Big breasts are considered a bonus by some, yes. By others, less so. Regardless, their size is beside the point: what you should be doing in a professional environment is to look as sharp as possible. Wear good clothes, nice shoes, try to be slim and fit.

But being prepared to take to the knife for career advancement seems to me to be a grave skewing of priorities. Being attractive can help your career, perhaps. But on the list of other things that can help your career, it should be ranked fairly low. Intelligence, ambition, hard work, good ethics. Focus on these to get ahead in your career. And attractiveness – particularly breast-size – is a massive double-edged sword. It’s asking for sexual attention to get ahead: something in the same sphere as giving sexual favours to the boss for a promotion. Wouldn’t you rather be promoted because you’re really good? I would.

Dr Hakim seems to me to be playing with fire – she may be stating a truism, that beauty has a positive effect on people’s estimations of you and their desire to help you. But she’s also suggesting that in a world in which women are already relentlessly preoccupied with how they look, they should be even more stressed out about it. Yes, Hakim applies the rule to men, too – but, although they’re getting more worried about looks, they’ve got a long way to go in the skin-deep neurosis stakes. And the male ability to get ahead at work has not been a problem, to date – so being told attractiveness can help won’t carry the same stressful meaning. Set an example by showing that women of all breast sizes can thrive at work. vexed@cityam.com

Can Mold Develop in Saline Breast Implants?

I was catching up on plastic surgery news and came across this very well worded article that provides some excellent practical guidelines for breast implants.

Have a read because Dr Saia hit the nail on the head when it comes to those wanting to make you think breast implants are wildly dangerous for you.

Reader Question: Mold in Saline Breast Implants?

June 29th, 2011 by admin Leave a reply »

I read online a woman telling about how her saline breast implants got mold and she had terrible problems. Does this happen very often?

A few years ago I put up a YouTube video of my experience with silicone gel breast implants. Now every six months to a year somebody posts a comment about how saline implants are just as dangerous. A frequent portion of that response is a statement about a moldy saline implant. My response is and always has been, if saline implants are so often affected by mold, then why have I never seen it?

I have been implanting (and at times removing) breast implants for over 15 years. You would think if something was a dangerous and common phenomenon that I would be seeing it. I haven’t. Not even once.

A saline implant when left on a table outside of your body can develop mold, but this doesn’seem to happen inside patients. The difference is probably that when implants are properly placed inside a woman’s breasts, her immune system helps protect them from such problems.

Breast implants have risks, but these risks can be minimized by making good choices….choose good surgical talent and facilities, don’t go too large, put your implants under good soft tissue coverage and stay with saline over silicone implants in most cases.

Understand that there are special interest groups of sorts online that want everyone to believe breast implants are dangerous. These groups exaggerate and fabricate on a regular basis to support that belief.

Best Regards,

John Di Saia MD
