Blood test could predict heart attacks: US study

This is very interesting... I know it's not plastic surgery related but interesting none the less, can you imagine the dramatic reduction of cost these early signs can have on our health care system ?

Although I imagine people wouldn't be lining up to tell if they are going to have a heart attack anytime soon....interesting to see where the conversation on this goes

WASHINGTON — US researchers have found oddly-shaped blood cells in heart attack patients, indicating that a blood test could help predict whether a patient is at risk of an imminent cardiac emergency.

The study by the Scripps Translational Science Institute (STSI) found that the endothelial blood cells from heart attack patients are abnormally large and misshapen, sometimes appearing with multiple nuclei.

That could make them reliable indicators of an impending heart attack, according to the study published this week in Science Translational Medicine.

Fat From Thighs, Butt Could Be Breast Implant Alternative - WCVB-TV
http://www.thebostonchannel.com/health/30659440/detail.html

Whether it’s because of cancer or for cosmetic reasons, nearly half a million American women will undergo breast augmentation this year. But for women who are opposed to implants, a new option is gaining ground: fat grafting.Boston plastic surgeon Dr. Dan Delveccio has been doing traditional breast augmentations for years and added fat grafting in 2006. He said a fat-grafted breast is as natural a breast as you can get.”Fat grafting is simply taking fat out of one part of the body with liposuction and like seeds, implanting them into other parts of the body,” he said. One of his recent patients is Lauren, a 26-year-old economics graduate student at Harvard University. She had lost a lot of weight in recent years, but there were some areas that she felt diet and exercise couldn’t touch. Lauren was concerned about putting something foreign in her body and knew that implants, whether saline or silicone, would have to be replaced periodically

Plastic Surgery Does ‘Turn Back the Clock’ - Bloomberg

I was reading this article yesterday morning and I wanted to share something that caught my attention about how much money American's spend in 2010 on Plastic Surgery..

"A face lift can make a person look seven years younger, according to a study that asked volunteers to guess the ages of patients who had cosmetic surgery.

Shown photos of 60 people who had the procedures, the volunteers, composed of first-year medical students, estimated the patients to be an average of 8.9 years younger than their actual age, according to the study published online today in the Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery. Before surgery, the medical students perceived the patients to be 1.7 years younger, yielding an age difference of 7.2 years after plastic surgery.

Americans spent almost $10.7 billion on cosmetic procedures in 2010"

Our thoughts, beliefs and perception create the world around us. Perhaps you have heard it said:  "perception is reality".  How disappointing is it when you feel good and a friend asks "is everything all right, you look so tired and stressed".  Have you seen a photograph of yourself and thought "how did this happen to me, I look so old".  My patients often ask "how far back will a facelift turn the hands of the clock".  I answered this question by showing them before and after images of surgery i have done. A new study was recently released, that quantified just how much younger patients looked after facial rejuvenation. Medical students were shown pictures of patients that had under cosmetic surgery. On average the medical students estimated that the patients were 8.4 years younger than there actual age after facial plastic surgery.  That is  a powerful change.  So let me ask you, if the world sees you as 8.4 years younger than you really are, may you subtract 8.4 years from your age when someone asks "how old are you?"  As the world perceives us to be younger do we then act younger, setting up a cycle so that we look younger yet. No matter how you feel about aging or plastic surgery, remember a youthful attitude  will help us feel young
